Are You at Risk of Hyperpigmentation?

Posted on 12 Jan, 2016

Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which small patches of the skin become darker than the rest; it is common in both men and women aged between 20 to 50. Pigmentation can particularly affect those with darker skin tones, at The Laser Treatment Clinic we aim to offer safe pigmentation treatment for Black African and Indian Skin, as it often causes people to become self-conscious about their appearance, which in turn can bring on anxiety and depression.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation has become a prevalent skin condition causing issues for women in the past decade. Caused by the overproduction of melanin by the pigment cells in your skin, it can age skin, making you appear much older than you are. For those longing for a much more youthful appearance, investing in treatments to banish wrinkles and smooth lines on the face is all part of a daily routine. Most people find investing in treatment to fix darker patches of skin, is worth it as it leaves you with permanently clear skin and an increase in confidence. Patchy pigmentation in the skin doesn’t reflect light evenly, and one of the biggest indicators of youthful skin is the ability to reflect light. It is important to understand your risk of hyperpigmentation, and the solution.

The most common causes of Hyperpigmentation are:

  • Damage to the skin from overexposure to the sun and UV rays
  • Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, caused by an injury or damage to the skin
  • Hyperpigmentation caused by use of harsh Skincare Products
  • Certain Medications
  • Hormonal Disorders
  • Pregnancy

Are You at Risk?

The most common cause in young women and men is damage to the skin from overexposure to the sun, as the underlying factor causing hyperpigmentation is the overproduction of melanin in the skin. Sun exposure is the most common factor as it triggers an increase in melanin, known as your skins natural sunscreen as it protects from harmful UV rays (this is why people tan in the sun). Excessive sun exposure can disrupt this process, leading to hyperpigmentation of the skin, especially in areas which are more visible to the sun including the arms and face.

Hyperpigmentation also affects up to 90% of pregnant women, occurring as a direct result of hormonal influences throughout the pregnancy, often known as ‘the mask of pregnancy’, as it can cause darker patches to appear on the face and arms.

Skin expert, Zaheda Hafez, explains, “Those with darker skin tones are prone to skin conditions including hyperpigmentation. Darker skin such as Black African, Asian Indian and Arabic skin has larger melanocytes than lighter skin tones, therefore they are prone to triggers that cause pigmentation. The Laser Treatment Clinic is the only clinic that offers the exclusive Derma White Treatment, specifically created for these darker skin tones to treat Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.”

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is caused when the skin is healing from an injury or inflammation; the healing process can cause melanin to increase in the area causing darker patches of skin alongside the scarring caused by an injury or operation.

Protect Against Hyperpigmentation

The most obvious protection against hyperpigmentation is quality sun protection, as this is the most common cause of increasing melanin in darker skin types. Sun protection should be worn on visible areas of skin, including the face and arms, all year round, to protect those more vulnerable to hyperpigmentation.

Exfoliating regularly, and using quality skincare can also help prevent hyperpigmentation in the skin.

Treating Hyperpigmentation

Depending on the cause of the hyperpigmentation the best treatment can vary. Hyperpigmentation caused by pregnancy often goes away on its own after the birth of the child, as hormone levels become more stable. However, other causes of hyperpigmentation including PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation), will need a different route of treatment.
