Stretch mark removal with the help of laser treatment

April 15, 2010

Women often suffer stretch marks because of pregnancy, hormonal imbalances and sudden weight gain. In men, stretch marks may be the result of excessive work at the gym, use of steroids and weight fluctuations.

Medical experts have devised new methods to treat this problem. Stretch mark removal is possible with the help of laser treatment.

In order to understand the working of laser stretch mark removal treatment, we need to first understand how stretch marks are formed.

How stretch marks are formed

The skin on our bodies is layered. The top layer is called epidermis, the middle layer is called dermis and the deeper layer is called the subcutaneous layer. The expansion of the dermis causes stretch marks as it is only flexible up to a certain extent. Once the skin stretches beyond its limit, the collagen is ruptured forming red or purple lines on epidermis, becoming visible externally.

Laser treatment

Highly concentrated light is centred on the dermis with the help of a laser. The scar tissue is removed during this process and collagen is encouraged to form new layers of skin in its place.

Side effects

The common side effects of treatment are dryness, itching and redness of the skin, but these are minor and only last a matter of days.
