Scars can be difficult to conceal

Scars are the result of the body’s natural repair mechanism that is triggered into action when the skin is damaged. New skin cells are produced to close the lesion and allow healing. The only problem is that these repair jobs can often remain fairly noticeable.

The structure of scar of tissue is unlike that of normal, healthy skin, and as a result, it looks and feels fibrous. It tends to be thicker than normal skin tissue and lacks hair follicles and pigmentation. Scar tissue can have a raised or depressed appearance, depending on the type of damage sustained.

Some scars, known as keloid scars, are raised and can continue developing past the site of the original injury. They can cause considerable difficulty and embarrassment, particularly if they are in a prominent place.

Unfortunately, once scars have formed, they are permanent. If they occur on parts of the face or body that are more difficult to camouflage or conceal, they can cause real psychological distress. While there are some types of specialist makeup available, it is important to learn how to use them to hide scars effectively.

Another alternative scar treatment is to try a combination of microdermabrasion, laser and ultrasound therapy. A non-invasive procedure, this can often offer significant improvement.
