How to Avoid Acne Scarring

Posted on 09 Dec, 2021

Acne scarring is often not thought about when an individual is managing their acne breakout, however these can actually be a much more permanent skin concern than the acne itself. During an acne breakout your skin will attempt to repair itself. It does this by producing collagen fibres. If your body does not produce enough collagen, scars can occur, these will appear as pitted scars. However, if your skin overproduces collagen, a raised scar may appear in place of the acne.

Types of acne scarring

To understand acne scarring, it is important to know, there are many different types of acne scars.

Boxcar scars: shallow to medium depth scars with defined edges that are most commonly found across the cheeks.

Ice pick scars – deep scars with a narrow diameter, they can often resemble large pores.

Rolling acne scars – shallow scars with a wide diameter, they often appear as undulations on the skin. Rolling scars differ from boxcar scars in that they aren’t sharply defined. The area of the skin itself appears uneven.

Prevention of Acne Scars

Although scarring isn’t completely preventable, there are efforts you can take to prevent the development of acne scars or minimise their appearance. These include:

Accessing a treatment for your acne as soon as this appears

One of the best things you can do to initially prevent the appearance of acne scars is to treat your active acne as soon as this appears. Either by using an over-the-counter treatment from a pharmacy, contacting your healthcare provider for a treatment, or by getting in touch with a skin specialist. A professional will be able to take a closer look at your acne and determine the best possible treatment plan. Avoiding scarring as much as possible.

As well as being able to offer laser treatments for acne scarring, we also offer acne treatments at The Laser Treatment Clinic. This includes a complete tailor-made treatment plan to suit your specific acne issues and skin concerns. Using both our advanced laser treatments and products from our Zaheda skincare range.

Reducing inflammation of the skin

Where acne blemishes become inflamed, these are much more likely to leave behind a scar. Inflammation should be avoided as best as possible or treated as soon as this appears on the skin. Avoiding excessive scrubbing of the skin and harsh chemicals, which will further irritate the skin’s surface, will help to minimise inflammation.

Avoid squeezing or popping acne pimples

Although this can be hard to avoid, picking and squeezing of acne pimples can extend the healing period and leave behind scarring. If you simply cannot help yourself, making sure the area is cleaned thoroughly before and after extraction will help to minimise the scarring left behind. For best practice, we always recommend speaking with a professional before treating any skin concerns at home.
