Reducing the risk of developing thread veins

It is important to ensure that you minimise the risks of more thread veins forming by making certain changes to your lifestyle that will help to prevent or reduce the volume of blood left accumulating in your veins.

• It is important to maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight puts the body under intense stress and puts pressure on the circulatory system, thus increasing the risk of developing both thread and varicose veins.

• Exercise is essential to maintaining a healthy circulatory system. It is important to engage in activities that strengthen the legs, which will in turn help with vessel strength and circulation. Running, cycling, jogging and walking will all help to do this.

• Sitting or standing for long periods of time can result in the accumulation of blood in the vessels, particularly in the lower limbs. It is important to make sure that you move around on a regular basis to keep that blood flowing back up to your heart.

• Do not sit with crossed legs, or wear clothes that are so tight they could restrict circulation. It is also a good idea to raise your legs when you can. Resting in this way provides your legs with real relief from the pressure building up within its vessels.
