The Essential Guide To Acne: Common Myths If you have suffered from acne as a teenager, you’ll know only too well what it’s like to hear countless stories about why you have acne, what’s caused it and the things you can do to cure it. The truth of the matter is, there are hundreds of things that have been said about acne over the years and a lot of what has been said is probably untrue. To make sure we are aware of what’s factual and what’s not, let’s have a look at some of the most common myths to do with acne so we can discover just how much we really know about the condition.

1.     Acne is caused by poor hygiene

Many people believe that people who have acne, experience it because they have dirty skin. This is not always the case. In fact, taking part in a daily skincare routine doesn’t necessarily mean that you will never suffer from the condition. Rather it’s the technique in which you use that can trigger acne. For example, scrubbing your face, back and chest even more than usual can dry out the skin and make your acne worse. With this in mind, it’s better to use the correct skincare products for your skin type and condition, such as washing your face gently using the Deep Sea Cleanse, followed by Ocean Tone, finished with Marine Fluid Shine-Free moisturiser to help balance and therefore avoid further acne breakouts.

2.     Adults don’t get acne

This is probably one of the most common myths that has ever been linked to acne and it couldn’t be further from the truth. Acne is still found in a significant amount of adults in their 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s. Sometimes it can be a continuation from childhood or it can simply begin in adulthood.

3.     Chocolate can cause acne

Whilst chocolate can be the cause of other health issues, an acne breakout is not amongst the list. Some studies have suggested that milk products might aggravate acne because of bacteria that is found in the milk. However, milk is essential for teeth and bone strength, so cutting it out of your diet wouldn’t be beneficial for your health.

4.     You can’t wear makeup if you have a breakout

Some women feel like if they have an acne breakout, the best solution is to put more makeup on to cover it up. Whilst this may seem like a good way to cover up the acne, it actually makes it worse because the thicker the foundation, the more the pores can be clogged up. Lighter powdered foundations aren’t nearly as aggravating for the skin and are much less greasy. We recommend Mineral foundation as a good cover for all skin types especially acne skin as gives a good cover whilst not being oily or blocking pores. And it is also a good cover up for Men to use until the acne has cleared as this helps you go about your daily routine without the acne being the focus. The sales consultants for a Mineral makeup range such as ‘Bare Minerals’ (available at  the larger Department store’s) should be able to assist you in choosing the correct product and shade for you. Once you have the correct shade and instructions for use this should help you manage your acne skin and go about your day with more confidence.

5.     Popping spots will make your acne go away

Wrong. In fact, popping spots actually deepens the pimples and causes scars. Although popping the spot may reduce its size initially, it actually causes increased inflammation and makes the acne look worse and last longer. And may lead to permanent scarring.
