Many people around the world suffer from acne. Before treating it, it is important to know what causes acne.

What causes acne?

Acne is a skin problem that involves the activity of pilosebaceous units; sebaceous glands and hair follicles. These pilosebaceous units are there all over the body except for certain regions like the lower area of the lip, feet and the palm. They are present in excess over the face, chest area and the back.

The sebaceous glands excrete a moist substance known as sebum which is responsible for the moisture content of the skin. During the stage of puberty, there is a fluctuation in the concentration of certain hormones in the body which makes these glands produce sebum in excess. The heightened activity of the sebaceous glands can be attributed to the increase in the hormone androgen.

Acne causing bacteria

The human skin contains a naturally occurring bacterium known as the P acnes bacterium. The sebum produced by sebaceous glands fuels the growth of these bacteria. During puberty, the excess sebum that is produced causes an increase in the number of follicles. To combat the bacteria, white blood cells start moving towards these hair follicles. As the hair follicles are attacked by the white blood cells, their walls break and all the content that is present inside the follicles gets poured onto the surface of the skin. This results in acne and skin inflammation.

Laser acne treatment

Laser acne treatment is possibly the best procedure to cure acne. With laser acne treatment, the acne is cured permanently. Laser acne treatment is performed in two ways. In the first method, the acne causing bacteria is destroyed while in the second treatment, the size of sebaceous glands in reduced.
