What to do when a tattoo goes wrong…

Getting a tattoo done always involves an element of risk; it is always important to make sure that the tattoo artists you choose are experienced and talented if you don’t want to end up disappointed with the results. It is also essential to make sure that you see proof that the tattoo parlour complies with good hygiene practices.

The bigger the tattoo, the greater the risk, as a large tattoo will be more difficult to get rid of should it go wrong or should you simply fall out of love with it. Think about the position of the tattoo, too. If it is difficult to hide under clothing, it could make life difficult.

If you have had a tattoo done and regret doing so, there are a couple of solutions to try:

• A cover-up. This involves covering the original tattoo with a new one. This may not be possible with all tattoos and may involve getting a larger second tattoo in order to cover the first. If you take this route, you must make sure that you will not regret the second design!
• Tattoo removal. Laser tattoo removal is an effective way to get your offending tattoo to fade away. It requires a course of treatment, that is not without discomfort, but does provide good results if performed by an experienced professional.
