Why tattoos of idols can be risky

Many people have chosen to have a tattoo of their idol inked into their skin as a permanent reminder or source of inspiration.

It may not be such a sensible idea, however, as the associations that such an image can carry can be multiple and can be misinterpreted. The actress Megan Fox is one example. She originally has a tattoo of Marilyn Monroe’s face tattooed onto her forearm, in a highly visible place. She has now undertaken laser tattoo removal treatment, as she no longer wants to be identified with the icon’s negative associations…

And now, a British man has had a tattoo of Top Gear presenter James May’s face inked… on his leg. While choosing an icon of the silver screen may be understandable, it is not entirely clear why anyone would choose to have James May permanently etched into their skin.

Getting a tattoo should not be undertaken lightly. There are risks attached: the risk of infection, of an unsatisfactory design, or simply the risk of a change of heart. Laser tattoo removal can be very effective, particularly on simple black tattoos, but it is not without its inconveniences either. Let’s hope the James May tattoo doesn’t become a source of regret…
