What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

Posted on 11 Feb, 2021

The cause of Hyperpigmentation is an increase in the production of the pigment melanin in your skin. This natural pigment gives us the colour of our skin, hair, and eyes. The increased production of melanin to certain areas of the skin, particularly the face, can be caused by several factors. This includes, sun exposure, skin inflammation or injuries, age, and hormone changes (more common amongst women). This skin condition disproportionately affects those with darker skin – typically Black and Asian skin. This is because this skin type already contains higher amounts of melanin.

Sun Exposure and Sunspots

Sun exposure and sun damage is considered the most common cause of hyperpigmentation. Sunlight triggers the production of melanin in your skin, and it acts as a protective barrier in your skin to damage. When you are exposed to high levels of UV rays your skin’s production of melanin can be affected, thus resulting in hyperpigmentation appearing on the skin. Once you have started to notice this appearing, if you continue to go out in the sun without SPF, these patches of skin will only get darker.

Hormones

Hormonal changes can be a cause of a particular type of hyperpigmentation known as melasma. Unlike other forms of hyperpigmentation, melasma is seen amongst Asian and Caucasian women. Melasma is caused by a mixture of changes in hormones and UV exposure and can be found on the face, specifically across the cheeks.

Hyperpigmentation and Acne

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is a specific type of skin issue appearing because of inflammation or an injury to the skin. This is very common if you have suffered with acne in the past. The skin tends to appear darker after the initial injury or acne is cleared and treated. It is important to understand that there are various types of hyperpigmentation, which can lead to confusion regarding treatment. We always recommend speaking to a specialist when addressing skin concerns and considering different treatment methods.
