Laser skin pigmentation treatment – facts that patients should know

Posted on 25 Sep, 2010

Skin pigmentation is quite a common problem, and can be caused by a number of things. This skin condition can be difficult to treat, but it has become easier with the introduction of laser pigmentation treatment. Here are few things a patient should know about the treatment before opting for it:

2 types of pigmentation

There are 2 main types of pigmentation. One is light pigmentation, which can be characterized by dark spots, sun spots and uneven skin tone. The other is hyper-pigmentation.

Can both of these pigmentation types be treated?

Skin pigmentation of different intensities can be treated with laser pigmentation treatment. Hyper-pigmentation requires more sessions whereas standard pigmentation spots can often be treated in fewer sessions.

How does the treatment work?

Laser skin pigmentation treatment uses an intense beam of light to remove the pigmentation spots. The light is directed at affected areas, where the red blood cells which carry oxygen absorb this light. The light then dissolves the pigmentation spots and forms new, healthy skin on the treated area.

This is one of the most effective and painless ways to treat pigmentation, although you need to consult a doctor before opting for the treatment.
